Time in recovery: 3 years, 4 months       Age: 39       Gender: Male

Hello my name is Richard, and I would like to take this time to thank my neices and nephews for helping me through my drug problem. They all told that I could do it if I put my mind to it! They also told me that if I wanted my childern back, I would have to go get help. So I went and got the help that I needed, and finally got my life back. I can't ask for anymore than that. I am now attending AA meetings, and I am helping a friend who is going through the same thing that I went through. I go to family drug court, and I keep the drug court updated on my progress. They are so proud of me--I am the second person who finshed that family drug court, and I know that I am doing everything they asked of me. I still want to help people in the world. I even go to the jail here in my hometown and talk to the incarcerated men and women. I ask them one qustion: "What made you start drinking or using drugs?" So many of them say, "to fit in," or "it was peer pressure," or "it was too hard to say 'no'." Those were the reasons they started using, and now they look back and wonder, "was it all worth the trouble that drinking and taking drugs got me in"? Addiction put them where they are today--in jail. They also tell me that if they had a choice now after the fact, they would have never started using and drinking in the first place.
