OASAS Stories of Recovery
Javier of New York
Posted: August 13, 2012       Individual
Time in recovery: 2 years, 4 months       Age: 49       Gender: Male

Greetings, my name is Javier E. Perez and the turning point that lead to my recovery was when I was arrested for Public Bribery in the 3rd degree while I was working as a public servant. After 11 years of sobriety, I relapsed on cocaine in May 2009! I needed money to sustain my insidious and uncontrollable desire for cocaine. I used my position as a public servant to solicit funds for my cocaine habit! My arrest lead me to a 18 month Mentally Ill Chemically Addicted (MICA) outpatient program which I completed in December of 2011 successfully!

I was able to overcome my addiction via excellent counselors by attending individual and group counseling that provided useful information to help me change my negative behaviors and way of thinking into a new and positive belief value system! During the period of my recovery, I was able to study and obtain my CASAC certificate and I attended a masters level program in Human Services to help me get into the field of alcohol and substance abuse counseling so that I can positively make a difference in someone else's life! If I can save one person from the life of addiction, my mission is accomplished! Although my addictive behavior scarred my life, I am able to go forward and make a difference for someone else! The road to recovery is imminent and every recovering addict can join in to help society overcome the deadly disease of alcoholism and drugs! I am hoping to give back to society by becoming the best drug and alcohol counselor to assist those individuals to get back into the road of recovery! It is never too late to pick up the pieces and put your life together to complete the puzzle of a SOBER LIFE!
